Game Fishing in the Dordogne
The Dordogne Waters

I have been told that beautiful fish (such as my two freshwater favourites Trout and Grayling) can only be found in beautiful places. Through all my past fishing experiances, I have learnt this, without exception to be true - from the famed English chalk streams and the mightier Welsh, Usk & Wye rivers, right the way through to the lesser known, varied waters of the Dordogne.

Over the past two years, it has been my mission to explore the very best fresh water rivers to fish in the Dordogne - a tough gig but someone’s gotta to do it! And to my delight, I discovered a select few fishing spots to rival even the most reputable of British waters.
Unlike many English chalkstreams, these stunning stretches are not intensively fished nor manicured and hold healthy, hungry populations of Trout & Grayling, always eager to gulp down whatever artificial meal of choice you’ve put on offer.
Possibilities on where best to fish given the time of season, weather conditions and preferred fishing style will be discussed in advance of your trip as part of planning your bespoke day’s fishing.

The Fishing & Its Setting

In 2012, the Dordogne river basin was recognized by UNESCO for its outstanding setting and natural heritage and added to the World Network of Biosphere Reserves.
The Dordogne is one of the most highly regarded regions for Fly Fishing in France and is greatly sought after by both locals and visiting enthusiasts.
The rivers of the upper Dordogne valley are plentiful and spoil those wanting to fish with choice in what is one of the most scenically breathtaking areas of France. The Dordogne itself is a mighty river and is home to an abundance of trophy sized game fish - just make sure your rig can take the strain. It’s fed by many varied and notable tributaries - often granite based with a wonderful peaty, tea coloured quality yet extremely clear. These hold very good densities of small feisty trout where stealth and ‘river smarts’ is key to the catch.
ABOUT

"I spent 2 lovely days fishing this Summer with J.R.B Fly Fishing & Jon as my guide. As a complete beginner I couldn't have been happier with my introduction to the sport. From suggesting 2 idyllic spots to showing me how to set up my rod & cast confidently - Jon was knowledgeable & most importantly made the experience great fun!"

“So we three - an Englishman, a Frenchman and an Italian - booked an expedition with JRB Fly Fishing having limited experience between us and so not quite knowing what to expect. We need not have worried. Our day proved instructive, entertaining and a day out that we will each long remember… and we all caught fish! Jonathan is the perfect host and an ideal guide - no shortage of fine local produce and exotic fishing tales… we will be booking early for next year’s return."

I am passionate about Fly Fishing, its history and the lessons it teaches you in camaraderie, humility & tactics. Admittedly, I have only been taking this sport seriously for the past four years and do recognise there is a lot more to learn. That said, every seasoned fishing veteran I have ever met, has said the same. I did fish as a child - but after a few tempestuous father son childhood expeditions, there was a break in service (me under appreciating the finer nuisances of the craft, I think it was!)

Whilst I do appreciate the art of fly fishing and the patience and skill required, I am also a big believer in just getting the rod quickly & effortlessly set-up, flinging a fly out and seeing what comes my way. The accompanying food and drink and the serenity of the water and its backdrop plays an equally important part in a good day’s fishing for me.

There are some common misconceptions about fly fishing - the main one I think is difficulty. Whilst mastering the craft is a life-long labour of love, it only takes a day on the river for a novice to catch their first ever fish on a fly. And what an experience it is!
"My son (8yr) & I spent a superb day fishing with Jon on the Dordogne. The day started with some excellent fly fishing tactics, & basics on rods, flys & where the fish may be feeding. Jon laid on a cracking picnic hamper with some beautiful home made produce. We then proceeded to test our fly technique in the river - Jon tutored my son brilliantly & we really tapped into his excellent knowledge. A really brilliant day, superbly led by Jon. I would thoroughly recommend this experience to anyone who wishes to have a great day on the river & learn about fly fishing."
